Grow fruit in your own backyard! It’s one of the most rewarding activities of gardening. Fruit trees provide year-round interest. They are as beautiful as any ornamental tree. A peach in bloom is a virtual cloud of pink; a pear or plum a cloud of white. But unlike an ornamental, the flowers of fruit-bearing trees are followed by flavorful fruits that you can pick fresh from the tree at the peak of ripeness.
We are fortunate to be able to grow many types of fruits on the upper Gulf Coast. There are fruits that can suit any size yard or garden; even the patio in a container. With a little planning, a fruitful yard can be harvested nearly year-round.
If you are looking for something that is relatively low-maintenance, start with citrus, figs, and berries. Citrus is evergreen in most winters, has attractive, glossy foliage, fragrant flowers, and a long harvest season. Figs are super easy. They are hardy, require very little attention, and the harvests are large and packed with nutrition. Berries are highly productive. They can be grown as a large shrub or be trained to a decorative trellis.
Don’t overlook the landscape value of fruits. In addition to their flowers and fragrance, fruits can be an asset to the aesthetics of your garden. There are several varieties of peaches, nectarines, and plums that have dramatic purple foliage. Grapes can be trained to an arbor or used to camouflage a shed, carport, or fence. Many fruit trees can be trained to grow flat against a wall as an elegant espalier.
The Arbor Gate carries a wide variety of fruit trees, shrubs, and vines that are suited to our climate and soil conditions. Let us help you choose the fruits that are right for your garden and family. We offer planting instructions and everything you need to be a successful fruit grower.
