The Smith County Master Gardeners have partnered with Tyler’s Carnegie Public Library to offer a new speaker series in 2017. Focused on relevant gardening topics for Smith County and the surrounding area, the series of presentations is entitled, “Master Gardeners at the Library.”
The next speaker is Greg Grant, Smith County horticulturist for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Tyler. Mr. Grant will be speaking on “The Rose Rustlers” Friday, February 10 at 11:30 am. Grant was an early member of the organization known as the Texas Rose Rustlers and was formerly an employee of the then new Antique Rose Emporium in Independence while he was in graduate school at Texas A&M University. He is the co-author of Heirloom Gardening in the South with Dr. William C. Welch and The Rose Rustlers, which will be released in the fall of 2017 by Texas A&M University Press. In his lecture, Mr. Grant will cover his introduction into the antique rose world and share tall tales of rescuing heirloom cultivars from cemeteries, old homeplaces, and aging gardeners.
All the “Master Gardeners at the Library” lectures are free and open to the public and take place at 11:30 am in the library’s auditorium. The Tyler Public Library is located at 201 S.
